We had an 8.30am pick up from the hostel, this huge truck turned up and we had to climb in the back, once the truck was full with about 15 people we thought that would be it, no more people. Boy were we wrong! He just kept stopping and picking more and more people up! In the end there were 35 people in a 15-20 seater truck. They were hanging off the back sat on a stool in the middle of the two side seats! Aw Asia never fails to amuse me!
Scott pulled a tesco tantrum at how many people he was pushing in the taxi and then when we got to the boat he was moaning at how many people were on the boat... You know we have been in Asia for 4 and half months now, you'd think he'd get used to the fact that if we are in a 10 seater van they're going to push at least 15 people in it with bags and maybe even push a chicken in there aswell, if we are on a boat they're going to overload it with people aswell! It's standard asia! There are no rules here and a lot of the time there isn't much common sense with health and safety either so Scott pipe down! :)
Our boat did have a lot of people in it, it's thai new year so all the locals do family gatherings and activities together... Boy do we choose our timings to do things! We were sat at the front so we didn't get sprayed with as much water as those that were at the back. The water was really choppy and the clouds were threatening thunderstorms again. Luckily it held off all day!
We were heading to the first stop and the other boat that was taking a load of tourists and locals to the same place broke down... So in the middle of the choppy sea we throw a piece of rope out to the boat in need... Our boat containing at least 35 people in it towed another boat with about 35-40 people in it. It was so dangerous! You could hear the pressure on our engine, it wasn't liking it one bit!
We eventually got to the Poda island, it was beautiful. Just like it is in the photos with the big rock sticking up out of the water and long tail. Boats lining the white sand beach.
We had a right nightmare trying to get our boats into shore because we had to try and drag it and glide it in.
We had around 1 hour there to get some gold photo shots.
Didn't realise but krabi was effected by the tsunami aswell. The Poda beach had a post stuck in the ground showing where the water rose during the tsunami, it rose 4 metres.. So the whole island was wiped away basically!
The area was nice, but better if the water wasn't as choppy and the sun wasn't trying to dodge the grey clouds.
Next stop was chicken island, the limestone rocks literally looked like a chicken. It's head and neck and it's body, as though it was sat down nesting.
On the way there the water got stupidly choppy, we were all using the life jackets as shields from the water but there was literally no point, we were absolutely ringing wet right through. Felt sorry for all the thai people who weren't planning in even getting off the boat to go snorkelling or go in the sea! It's so unpleasant getting wet like that on a boat and having to sit there wet in your clothes, it would have been alright if the sun was pounding down on us but it was in hiding so it wasn't cool.
We did some snorkelling around the coral, only about 6 of us got off, not sure any of them could swim mind! Floating around with about 3 life jackets on!
The coral is growing back but was wrecked by the tsnumai and people standing on it.
We did see some beautiful fish, the angel fish were gorgeous!
We stopping off next at tup island for some lunch, they carted a big box with containers of rice, green curry and mixed veg stew. It was gorgeous! Scott went in for thirds! Haha.
The island was nice, very windy and not much there apart from the sand bank you could walk back and forth on. I think it would be a lot different here if we weren't here for thai new year, the tours would probably be a lot quieter.
After lunch was the tricky bit. The tide had gone out and they couldn't take the boats to the sand bank because the water was too shallow so we had to walk about 300 metres out to the boats with the water at waist height. This would have been fine if we could see the sea bottom and we weren't trying to feel our way over spiky coral. Our feet were cut to bits. That bit wasn't good! I wouldn't recommend doing that! Maybe ask for a speedboat or a small boat!
The rain clouds were coming in close now, it was threatening rain but as soon as we were back on our way out to the next beach it cleared up magically and the sun was beaming!
We sat right at the front, the part of the boat that was up in the air and not catching any water. Everyone at the back were ringing wet again! Couldn't help but giggle!
We stopped off at a beach on the other side of Railay bay, it had some cracking limestone rocks! There were a few people rock climbing, we stood and watched envious of them. It looked really cool!
After a little people watch at some foreign girls trying to be Victoria's Secret models rolling in the water and sand, a walk into the "cave" and a few photos we climbed back aboard for the last stop where we finished the tour.
So we thought Ao Nang beach was supposed to be really nice but it isn't as good as some of the places we have been. I think we both prefer Phuket to Krabi overall. The tours are a lot better aswell. Not that we didn't have a good time today, but the water and snorkelling, and the beaches are a lot nicer. Maybe it was the weather? We aren't sure!
We had some grub and went back early to pack as we have to be up and out at 6am tomorrow morning. Last night in Thailand! Onwards and down to Malaysia!
