Days 374-380, 21-27 June '15, Chickees! Meet Fluff and Stripe - the first two chicks to be born on our watch. You may recall last week we discussed the "Make Hay While the Sun Shines" phenomenon. Well this week we really understood the concept of "Don't Count your Chickens until they Hatch". We actually had 3 eggs under this little chook and a day or so after Fluff and Stripe hatched, little chook decided egg No. 3 was a no-hoper and kicked it out from the nest. Because the chickens (aka: feathered cannibals) literally eat anything, we hiffed it over the fence and it was indeed a dud. Just an egg. We have 8-10 eggs due to 'chickify' next Friday, a couple of days before we leave. Other news from the chicken-front? One death this week - didn't even look like it had been got by a bird (or dog or cat) of prey. Actually looked like it had just fallen over and died (though probably in the opposite order). Other fatalities? A very fast, fluffy, grey rabbit strayed onto the property - just not fast enough. Sparky the Chicken Killer has been rechristened Sparky the Rabbit Ripper. Peanut had a pet dead bird for a few days. Could have been a jackdaw - like a big black crow. Mind you it was getting smaller every day until we tracked it down and disposed of it. Turning into a funeral home this joint. If nothing else, it reminds us to wash our hands constantly and avoid having the doggies lick our faces. Seriously. We know where those mouths have been.
