wrote my last blog entry on Fri early afternoon - instead of my nap (hope u appreciate that) later that day we went to the Kindergarten that i'l be teaching at. There are three different age groups here, I've been given the youngest and the oldest to teach, one class of each. The young ones are 2 years old, they don't even know chinese yet, let alone trying to teach them English. The older ones are 4 and 5, just slightly to young to go into grade 1 at school, but still I don't understand what it is that i'm supposed to do with them?
When we were there, more introductions, not to the children this time (lets face it, they wont know what were saying) but to the parents - they approved of us, Thank God lol. We went into the classroom of the children, they have the cutest wee beds and they were all waking up from their nap times. Also the rooms all have pianos in them, so worst case scenerio I play the piano for the entire 30 min lesson.
Went over to the last school that we'll be teaching at, the oldest of the three in the cluster, and obviously a government run school, in comparison to the others we went to, this is run down and needs some attention. I like the idea of working in 3 different schools, we get to see the difference in education and ideas of learning. The classes are of about 50, some more, and no room to do activities in the room. That cool tho cause there is a big court yard that we are allowed to use - as long as none of the kids run away. Not sure that would be a problem, one less to have to worry about lol.
Two of the Chinese English teachers took us out for dinner to a nice dumpling restaurant, then we decided to explore Changsha's nightlife. We went into one pub - 50 yuan for 2 beers, no thanks and we went to supermarket and bought cheap booze. Back to the flats for a few drinks, drinking games (which always end up messy) and the dangerous game of twister. The drinking game was only messy because the niavity of the Americans, we were naming countries in Europe, and he decided to inform me that Scotland was clearly NOT a country. Where is he from? clearly not Europe, or Scotland for that matter. As you can tell, I wasn't bothered by these comments at all and i'm totally over it. lol.
Saturday was spent trying to do our lesson plans for our classes, it was really hot outside, at one point it measured 41, to hot to be outside. Went out for dinner, when it had cooled slightly with the Chinese english teachers, they took us to the most famous restaurant in Changsha. Weird tho, they bought fried dumplings from the takeaway shop across the road and then brought them into the place we were eating. Would never have been allowed back home, well it is China :s
We then took a walk along Waulking street, loads of statues of the different things Changsha claim to have invented, like soya sauce and sticky tofu. If I were Changsha, i'd not wanna claim to having invented sticky tofu, it smells sooo rank that I couldn't even put it to my mouth. Apperantly it tastes better than it smells, i'm taking the word of the Chinese on that one for just now.
Sunday and once again trying to do our lesson plans. Finished the grade 2 lesson, its alot of just introducing yourself and singing a very lame song. Been online to try get inspiration on teaching kindergarten, 30 mins on the piano is seeming more and more likely lol.
