We spent 2 nights in a lovely little town called Pai, which was 3 hours from Chiang Mai.
The bus trip itself wasn't great - the journey is along very windy country roads, so you are being thrown about in the back of a minibus the whole way! When we arrived, we saw a tuk-tuk Taxi for the 'Happy House' so we thought we'd check it out. They had one bungalow available, and it was the best! It cost us 350TBH a night which is one of the cheapest accommodations we've stayed in so far. The place itself was lovely - it was very chilled out, the staff were brilliant and we met some good people there. We got friendly with a few of the people staying at the Happy House, one of them was Luke, who me & James swore we knew, but he's from Jersey and never been to Portsmouth! Odd! We had a good night out with them, ending in the Bamboo Bar where we met a couple who were on our bus journey. Of course, it was a good p*** up!
We rented a motorbike and visited a few tourist hotspots such as the Pai Canyon and some hot water springs. The water stinks though due to the sulphur, but is very clean. Some of the signs in the hot water springs were hilarious! They had blatantly just typed what they wanted to say in Thai to English, and it made NO sense! I've taken pictures to remember it by. One of the most memorable parts is where they say it has a 'Will Young smell'. So now I know what Will Young smells like - S**T! Haha! We'd been recommended a place called Coffee in Love, which is a nice coffee house (surprise surprise) and had amazing views over Pai. We shared the best white chocolate cheesecake slice ever - that really made our day!!!
We had already heard about a good tattoo place called Monkey Magic, so we went to check it out. James had a tattoo on the back of his right calf. It's of a shield type thing from the back of an old pocket watch that his Granddad gave to him, who sadly passed away shortly before we left England. The tattooist was brilliant and has done a fantastic job! It was a reasonable price too as he doesn't charge by the hour. Pai itself was really nice and we'd go back again (if it wasn't for the horrible journey!)
The bus journey back to Chiang Mai was hideous - I was hungover, and with the windy roads, I had to ask the driver to stop as I needed to be sick. It didn't stop there. Further down the journey, I was throwing up out of the bus window! I felt like death! And we had a nice 14 hour bus journey just 2 hours after this one! It is safe to say, that is my least favourite part of the trip yet! We were heading to Vientiane in Laos next, to visit the embassy and extend our visa, so that we can stay in Thailand longer as we only had 15 days coming in from Cambodia.
