Day 59 - Victoria Peak - Wednesday 14th December 2011
It doesn't seem to matter how early we get up, it's impossible to get out and to breakfast before noon. God knows what we'll do when we have to actually get up early for something!
We got up and dressed in our smartest rig - the India dress code certainly doesn't cut it in HK. I suddenly feel like a need some smarter clothes and shoes to blend in with the locals - they are so well dressed and turned out! We headed for the juice bar across the road for a freshly squeezed juice and strolled into Kowloon Park. The park is literally opposite our place and is a bit of a wonder; one minute you are caught up in the hustle and crowds of Nathan Road and then suddenly you're surrounded by greenery, lush plants and walkways. The park even has an exercise path and machines for the elderly, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool (the outside one is closed due to it being winter which is a shame), a bird aviary with huge parrots, lakes with terrapins and flamingos and even a maze! We walked through the park and came out the other side and headed for the Australia dairy company for breakfast. Don't let the name fool you - it's the most Honkers place we've been to so far and are definitely doing something right as the queue to get in is always around the block. We sat down and starred bewildered at the menu (it was all in Chinese!), luckily the man opposite was on hand to help and within a nano second we'd ordered and been delivered our breakfast of macaroni soup with pork, scrambled egg with ham and butter toast and a milk coffee. It was yummy! As soon as we'd eaten the last forkful, our plates were whisked away and we were ushered with our bill to the cashier - it seems in this town you eat and run.
We decided to head over to Victoria peak so started to walk towards the MTR station when we spotted a little bakery called breadtalk. It seems our Indian sweet tooth is yet to leave us as we couldn't help but walk in and walk out with 3 cakes - we justified this by telling ourselves we'd need a little snack for later on.
Once at Central, we walked over to the lower peak tram terminus and jumped on the tram up to the Victoria peak - this is a big mountain in HK. The journey was pretty cool and takes you right up to the upper terminus and the peak tower which is 396 metres above sea level. Once up there, we wondered about the shops and then decided to do the Hong Kong trial around the peak. This took us a few hours as we leisurely wondered around and took in the views, plus stopped off to eat our cakes and then spend some time playing on the elderly exercise park!
Once back at the peak, we decided to pop into the Bubba Gump shrimp restaurant for a snack and a beer. After sharing a shrimp platter we decided it would be rude not to share a desert - little did we know that the Mississippi mad pie cake was the size of a desert you'd serve at a dinner party for 6! Absolutely stuffed and feeling a little guilty about our sweet consumption, we walked about the peak viewing tower before heading back down to Central for a bit of window shopping retail therapy.
