Day 60 -Kowloon - Thursday 15th December 2011
In the cleanest, germ obsessed city I've ever visited, it seems that Adam has caught man flu. How ironic is it that we spent 2 months in some of the dirtiest cities in the world in India, where people pee, poop and gob yards from your feet and yet it isn't until we get to Hong Kong, a city where every toilet gives detailed instructions on how to wash your hands to get rid of germs and people are prompted to wear face masks if they have a cold, that Ad gets ill.
With my poor little soldier of a husband feeling ill we decided to suspend our plans of visiting the giant Buddha on Lantau Island till the next day and instead just have a leisurely day.
Ivan, our lovely guesthouse manager had left a little note through the door to say that the repair centre had called and my camera was fixed and ready to pick up - yay! He even drew us a little map to the shop - so cute!
After showering, we started the day with another freshly squeezed juice and a stroll through Kowloon Park before heading to toastbox for a late breakfast. 2 eggs, a coffee and toast with peanut butter later we left and headed to the camera repair centre. £75 and my camera was back to working order and I was a happy lady! Conveniently, the ladies market just so happened to be the next road along from the repair centre so we decided it would be rude not to pop along and check out the supposed heart of fake label city! Surprisingly, there wasn't a huge amount of fake stuff, and there was a definite lack of fake watches, much to Ad's disappointment. Apparently they are in the showrooms in the allies off the main street due to a recent clampdown and, what with Ad not feeling his best we decided we couldn't be bothered to put ourselves in a haggling situation in a random back alley for something we were not even sure if we wanted!
After an hour or so of perusing, we decided to make our way out to the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Gardens. We jumped on the ever efficient MTR to Diamond Hill and then wandered along to the entrance. The gardens were very serene and beautifully laid out - it's quite amazing how they have managed to create these gorgeous and idyllic spaces right in the middle of a city and several high rise skyscrapers. Right in the centre was a mini lake / big pond with the biggest koi carpe I have ever seen - it's like they've been regularly feed steroids!
We decided to head back to the ladies market to see if we could muster up the energy to firstly, want to buy something and secondly, haggle for it. I did spot a really cute umbrella with was shaped in a little cone with a Chinese ladies head (hard to explain!) but couldn't work out if it was worth the equivalent of £4. After yet another hour, we gave up and decided it was time to eat (it had been at least a few hours!). I'd read about a little joint over in Min Ying Street in the Jordan area that had won the Time Out's best dim sum in Hong Kong award and so thought we'd give it a go. We walked over several blocks to find the aptly named Dimdim Sum Dim Sum Speciality Store. Once in, we ordered several dishes and within 5 minutes we were stuffing our faces with delicious dishes such as pineapple buns, fresh shrimp dumplings, wontons with sweet sauce, cheese and scrimp crispy rolls, BBQ pork buns - the list goes on! It was indeed yummy! We paid the bill and decided to grab some tea and cakes on the way home - a couple of egg tarts, a coconut cake and a chocolate mousse cake. It seems the healthy eating will have to go on hold till Australia…………….
