Day 61 -Lantau Island - Friday 16th December 2011
With Ad feeling a little better, we decided to brave Lantau Island. We jumped on the MTR to Tung Chung and then started the long queue for the Ngong Ping cable cart. Yep it's touristy but well worth the wait and money to see the view from the cable cart. The only negatives being that it was pretty cold and the view not as good as it could have been as it was so hazy.
We arrived and were so cold decided that there was only thing that would help - a Christmas starbucks coffee! We drank so much chai in India that we now craze hot drinks regularly through the day and for some reason, getting hot drinks in HK seems to be quite difficult. We thought that little shops would sell cups of green tea but so far, for all our searching, we haven't yet found this and therefore starbucks and their cranberry, white chocolate Xmas mochas have filled the void.
Drinks in hand, we walked up to the Tian Tan Buddha aka the Big Buddha - it's the largest bronze statue in the world. We bought a ticket to get in which included lunch in the Po Lin Monastery too - brilliant! The Buddha was impressive but to be honest it's more impressive from far away. Once up and around, we headed back down and with our stomachs rumbling, we headed to the monastery for lunch. Once seated, the lady brought over several plates of veggie food - it was ok but all a little bit slippery and proved a bit of a nightmare to eat with chopsticks!
After lunch we walked up to the Wisdom path and looked at the large wooden sticks (can't remember their official name!) and then explore up and around the mountain. Feeling a bit silly, we took some stupid pictures with the distant Buddha (have a look at the photo album) and amused ourselves with laughing at the pictures for the rest of the day!
Cold (it was only 20 degrees!), we decided to head home to us for some sweet treats and bed.
