Martin & Sarah's Big Adventure
After stopping for a couple of days at the Abel Tasman national park, (where we also drove up a mountain made of marble! and saw the largest sandspit in the world), we headed onto a place called Westport.
Westport itself has not much going for it .... except it has a huge seal colony. It was really great to see the seals in the wild. There was about 20 of them, all completely unaware of us human beings looking down on them - there was even a few seal pups - they were gorgeous. The bull (male) seals were huge and made sure that all the female seals knew that they where around (sound familiar girls!)
Our next port of call was the Franz-Jospeh glacier, which a glacier surrounded by mountains and valleys. These glaciers you can actually walk on (although on this occassion we did not do this - as you need to go on a guided tour), but we did do a walk upto the glacier and above it. It was amazing, a huge river of ice, which is acutally gradually moving forward!
About half an hour from this glacier is another one called the fox glacier (not named after the mint), which is set in beautiful surroundings, with Mount Cook in the background.
This glacier we did actually climb, we had to use crampons, which looked a bit like a couple of nails, but were quite effective in helping us to not go skidding off of the ice. It was a truely great experience, we saw lots of crevases a couple of miles deep.
Anyway gotta go as time running out - will update this postcard later
