Martin & Sarah's Big Adventure
(Ignore the date, this postcard is from beginning of November 2004)
Since leaving Auckland we have been to a beach were you actually dig for hot water springs in the sand, it was really crazy with people trying to dig for the springs everywhere, unfortunately we were unsuccessful, so we had to settle for sitting in someone elses pool of hot water. Also on that day the tide was very high, so everytime martin managed to dig a hole in the sand, a great big wave came and washed it away - but still he kept digging. The water when it does decide to surface is absoutely boiling.
We then travelled onto Roturua, which you smell first before you actually see the town. Let me explain.... Roturua is situated on a fault line, which means it has a lot of heat very close to the surface, this steam/heat is released into the air releasing sulphur along with it, which has the lovely smell of rotten eggs - this smell is everywhere you go.
All around the town there is alot of steam coming from the ground (the picture on this postcard is one of the steam vents, called geysers) and even pools of bubbling boiling mud. The one good thing about the town, apart from the lovely smell, is that it has natural hot springs, which contain lots of minerals which are very good for the skin apparantly. We of course tested this out, it was very relaxing, and i swear i looked a whole day younger! We also had or own hot spring at the campsite which was bliss.
We are now off to Auckland yet again to go a meet my dad at the airport (its a suprise!), as he is also going to be touring around New Zealand.
Will write soon. Adios
