Day two at Zion started with an amazing drive into the park, a little by mistake. We drove in and went past the 1 mile tunnel to see some amazing views and stunning scenery. It's not where we were planning on going, so we had to turn around that big SUV and get back down the mountain to the shuttle bus. We need to goto the "Narrows"
We rented special water shoes, because this hike is going down a river canyon. You get the water socks and shoes and a hiking stick, so you can see as much of the canyon as possible. The rocky ground makes it a pretty technical walk, and you are able to go through the river to see your sights. When you are going against the current it takes every bit of your energy and sight to see where to put your feet, not fall down, and move forward up the river. It took us - 3 hours to hike 1 mile in! We stopped and swam, and jumped off the rocks into a deep part of the river, and saw some amazing views the whole way. It is the most popular walk in the park, however I can't imagine doing the whole thing. You can actually go 8 miles up and 8 miles back, but I think you would have to be superhuman to pull that off. We did a mile in, and a mile back and it took....HOURS!! Good news is that you are in the shade, you get to jump in the water anytime you want, and just enjoy your day. I would do it again anytime.
Back in town, we took our time and had a great meal and took those water shoes off! Yes, they were awesome, but I forgot about the mile walk in to the river, and back out! Hard work, deserves rewards. Another quick stop in the town of Virgin for ridiculous photos and we headed back to the hotel to chill. Tomorrow - heading to Moab, UT through another national park - great stuff!
- Cheers.
