So yesterday we packed up early and headed out. We went to a tiny commonwealth cemetery near our Airbnb then headed out to Omaha beach.
First stop was la cambe German cemetery. This time at least there were only two burials in each grave.
Omaha is where the Americans landed on d day. We stopped at several memorials and then the American cemetery. The American cemetery was so well American. It was huge, bold, and glorifying an freedom as an abstraction. But what sealed the deal proving it was American was the airport style security screening.
We then stopped at a cavados distillery/orchard. We tried apple juice, cider, and calvados. We bought 3 jugs of juice it was so sweat and tasty. Cavados was tasty but not something I needed to bring home with me.
We then when to jump beach. The Canadian d day beach. Apparently there was no comemerations until the visitor centre opened in 2004. We toured the museum and I actually learned quite a lot. We then went through two of the German bunkers and out over to the beach. It was pretty incredible.
We then went up to the cemetery at benny sur mer. This is the juno beach cemetery. It was quiet, very well kept. You could see the water in the distance. It was truly a resting place. There was no visitor centre, just a visitor book and register of graves in a metal box in one of the walls, which is easy to find if you know what your looking for but no one working. Not even any Gardeners when we were there.
Anyway from there we drove to our mont st Michel hotel that we booked on the road as the Airbnb was not to our standards. The hotel was nice but the view of mont st Michel was amazing. I literally stood at the bedroom window for half an hour drinking a beer and staring at mont st Michel lit up in the darkness.
