The travels of Karyn and Robert
Yassou!, we are here at last. This morning we sailed into the port of Piraeus and were one of the first off the Nieuw Amsterdam to met our guide Aristeidis who took us straight to all the 'unmissables' the Acropolis, Plaka, Lycabettus Hill, the Hellenic Parliament, Presidential Palace and the National Archaeological Museum. It was recommended to be first off the vessel to get the Acropolis early, we are glad we did as we spent an hour before the crowds climbing over the historic marble, looking at the Parthenon, its columns, ruins and the other temples. Next stop was the Olympieion (Temple of Zeus) that has more columns. These columns are Corinthian. This area was accessed by Hadrian's Arch - Hadrian was a nice Italian boy who was a great admirer of Greece. Third stop was Panathenaic Olympic stadium, which is an odyssey to marble 'kali marmaro', followed by the Presidential Palace and Parliament House, where we saw the changing of the guards. After that we went to a Lycabettus Hill a lookout where you can see all of Athens, from the islands to the sea. Nice photo op. Last stop was the National Archaeological Museum, this museum contains priceless exhibits that chronicle the birth of civilisation. This quote is for VIctoria - 'What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but is woven into the lives of others' ~ Pericles Our lives were woven interestingly tonight, we have smiled and said hello to two men as we have crossed paths on deck. This evening I left Robert for 20 minutes, when I returned he was talking in Italian to the two gentlemen, who were in bathrobes from the Spa. They are priests on holiday. They have not worn their collars until tonight. So tonight in the dining room sat a priest from the Ukraine, a priest from Quebec with a couple from Australia, speaking in Italian/English, the looks from the other passengers - priceless.
