The travels of Karyn and Robert
This morning I was up to watch the sunrise over the caldera looking directly at Fira on the Island of Santorini. Today is the first day we have used the ships tours. They keep placing highly reduced flyers in our letter box, we have ignored them until now. The idea of a priority tender to a port and a bus to the village of Oia and returned to Fira with a ticket on the Cable car was too good to miss. I know that Paul and Kate are braver than us and rented a quad bike, but I am risk adverse, I have been married to Robert for too long. Seeing the cars, buses and narrow streets I am glad.
The village of Oia was magnificent, the tour guide told us the best places for views and photos, so we ran past all the limping Americans and got in early. We had a Frappe on a terrace, the view was magnificent. No free wifi - just the view. We found a terraced cafe on a side street, still with views to the ocean with free wifi and began our frantic conversations with whoever is at home and awake.
We walked around the town on the marble pathways, only enough room for two donkeys to pass, or slow moving poms and americans.
Our bus dropped us off at Firi where we have hit a wall with trinket shops, so we opted for another cafe with a view to the ocean and this time we can see the planes arriving to the airport of Santorini.
I have a few minutes left before we trek to the cable car, Robert decided to be kind to the donkeys.
Good to sit and watch the world go by, as the Aegean Sea sparkles in the distance.
For those who are not aware the island of Santorini is located within an active volcano, a significant eruption formed the caldera of that the island rings around. The towns are located around the rim of the caldera and are on top of the cliffs. There is a road from one port and donkeys and a cable car from another.
Ciao, next post will be from our last Greek Island. Till then Yassou!
