Poochera 6:15am - Streaky Bay (sunrise + brekkie) - Smoky Bay - Ceduna (fuel + lunch) - Penong - Fowlers Bay - Nundroo (fuel) - Yalata (photo) - Head of Bight - Nullarbor 5:45pm
570 kms / 11 hrs
We woke up at 5:30am (SA time / 6am Sydney time) so we decided to get going. We left around 6:15am and drove the further 45km to Streaky Bay. We had breakfast and watched the sunrise over the bay. We had a walk on the long jetty and there was a very light rain shower. We bought some bread and groceries then kept driving. We did a drive through of Smoky Bay which is very similar to Streaky Bay (probably a bigger bay and jetty but smaller town). We then stopped in Ceduna and the tourist things we were going to do have since closed down or stopped due to lack of funds. So we decided to have an early lunch of pies and sausage rolls and eat them overlooking the water. There were a lot of aboriginals in Ceduna.
We drove through Penong which is supposed to have 100 windmills in the one paddock but I must have had my eyes closed as I thought there were only about 20! (I'm looking forward to seeing a picture that the CMJs took to see what I missed!) So I was a bit disappointed and didn't get a chance to take a photo as we couldn't pull over.
Our next stop was Fowlers Bay where we were hoping to see some whales. Unfortunately we were about 2 weeks early. It was a 22km detour each way with a 12km dirt road. It was still an interesting place to see as its a fishing town with big massive sand dunes and a really long jetty. We only walked a small portion of the jetty as just as we arrived it started sprinkling and was windy.
Todays driving has been very slow as after Smoky Bay there was a big wind so we were only driving about 80kms but after Fowlers Bay we were back around the 90kms but had rain instead. We are nearly near the Nullarbor now and the rain has stopped.
Our trip highlight so far was a stop at the Head of the Bight. Wow, it is such a spectacular spot. Unfortunately we didn't arrive till 4pm and the National Park closes at 5pm. There is a big boardwalk and you look out over the Great Australian Bight marine national park, the Bunda Cliffs and the beautiful big whales that migrate in the waters between July to September. There is a daily plane that flys from Perth to count the number of whales and today there is 45. The most they have counted in 171. Rog and I were just amazed by the place and we didn't want to leave. A few of the whales were close to the boardwalk and you could hear their noises, watch them coming out of the water, seeing the puffs of water, breeching, tails out of the water and splashing around. There were a lot in the distance too, as its a big body of water. If you look on the other side its the Bunda Cliffs and these too were beautiful and so large. My photos just don't do the place justice and we wished we could have stayed there longer. Josh liked it although he wasn't as excited as I thought he would be and I think Bronte saw one whale. She had more fun running up and down the boardwalk!
We sadly left at 5pm and kept driving along the Nullarbor. At one stage we had to pull off the side of the road as there was a big oversized truck carrying a mining truck. We don't know the protocol but the truck was a lot bigger than us! We stopped and about 133km East from the SA/WA border in a rest area with a couple of other caravans around 5:45pm (SA time). We quickly set-up and Rog cooked a butterflied lamb roast with vegetables for dinner. It took a long time to cook on the BBQ so we ended up finishing it in the caravan and eating dinner at 7:15pm. Whilst Rog & Josh were outside it started lightly raining and they could see a lightning storm in the distance.
We were all extremely tired so after we cleaned up we went straight to bed.
The car is saying that we travelled 850 kms today but I don't know how as i've added up our kms and come to 570km.
We saw a fox, sheep, cows, horses
