Day 20 - Alice Springs to Gemtree (143km / 2hrs)
We only had a short drive today so we decided to stay at the holiday park until 10am. The kids had fun at the playground while Rog & I got organised.
We passed the Tropic of Capricorn today and we were hoping it would bring us warmer weather but sadly it didn’t. The wind is so cold and I’ve had tights, a jumper and jacket on all day (I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt a few days ago!).
We arrived at Gemtree at midday. We had lunch and then played some cards and a board game. Then the kids and I walked down to the historic museum. They got bored very quickly so they played at the playground while I continued reading about the 12 pioneering neighbours of the Webb family of Mt Riddock. Their log homestead was built in 1928 and was relocated from Mt Riddock in 2017 to Gemtree.
We looked at the gem shop which was very interesting and then the kids rode and we walked the 3.5km nature trail. It was a very easy walk and it went past the airstrip and an old golf course and finished along the dry creek.
We then cooked our dinner in a little log hut away from the chilly wind. The kids played putt putt ‘Gemtree style’ with the kids camping next to us.
We had dinner and enjoyed watching the sunset then it was time to go inside our cosy caravan. The kids watched a movie while Rog and I did some trip planning.
