Up early for a change to find there was only decaf coffee at breakfast WTF??
Luckily I had stashed a few coffee bags along the way so we were able to make some real stuff in our room.
It's another gorgeous sunny, cloud free Southern autumn day, 25C the expected top.
The plan this morning was to tour Gracelands. Neither of us are really old enough to be Elvis fans but like other icons of that era, Marilyn etc we've both grown up with their images, their old movies and in the case of Elvis, his music, being a part of our lives. We stayed a 15 minute drive from there but set off a little earlier than we thought we had to cos every other city in the US has traffic snarls at this time of day. Not so memphis it would seem, zero traffic problems to the degree we started wondering if it was a public holiday lol
We arrived 20 minutes before opening time and already there was a massive queue formed and more piling in all the time. Before we could even park a 4th big tour bus pulled in ready to unload yet more to the queue. Deciding this was crazy we opted to give it a miss, head out of town and pointed the car west, once more travelling towards Dallas.
Across yet another bridge a few minutes out of Memphis and we found ourselves in Arkansas. I'm sure we've travelled over more bridges this trip than either of us have in the whole of the rest of our lives, they sure do love their bridges lol
We took a 20mile round trip detour to Lake Catherine State Park for our usual lunch. A gorgeous area, very peaceful shady place to picnic. It added an hour to the trip but was worth it :-)
So good to be back on Texan roads, 75mph is very sensible :-) We no longer stand out driving a car with a Texan number plate, no more being accosted as we park or pump gas with what's become the usual; where abouts in Texas are you from? Or you're not from around here are you? And my personal fave, you're a long way from home to which we usually replied, further than you think lol hearing the accent that usually got something like wow, where ARE you from?
Just west of Texarkana, sitting by the road in a junk yard we found a F1-11. Not a very suitable resting place for such a noble beast :-( the rest of Texas really is cattle country, we even spotted some classic Texan Long Horns. Pete is suffering serious lamb chop withdrawal, he keeps an eye out for lambs in the field in the hope we will be able to buy some somewhere but so far nothing .
Weird sighting of the day, a bloke driving his ute along the freeway at about 50mph with his head out the drivers window because, wait for it, his bonnet was smashed up and fully covering his windscreen!! He had long hair too which was blowing in his face lmao so funny but unfortunately I was too slow to get a pic.
Checked in at the flash Wingate by Wyndham in Dallas for the first of our free nights we earned by using their brand for most of the trip. Usually about twice what we normally pay per night and it shows lol. We brought up all we had in the car. It's all gotten a little out of hand, about a dozen bags lol. We've tried to get it all sorted but think we will need to buy another suitcase tomorrow and put one of the soft bags, it's contents and a bit more besides in it. Pretty sure one way or another we will get it all ready to fly though.
We've booked our flight to LA in two days, two nights there and it'll be off home.
