The further west we went yesterday and today as we head south it's getting warmer all the time. The jeans and jumpers we pulled out for Canada have been stowed back in the big suitcase and we are back to shorts and t shirts. Heading around Cincinnati we saw a lot of cargo trains hauling coal.
Like yesterday it's a dull, cloudy day. It's almost a daily occurrence to see a car pulled over and a cop or cops emptying the car out presumably to search it. Think I've only ever seen that once ever in Oz. Also in the daily occurrence category is roadworks. In every state on pretty much every road there seems to be non stop work being carried out, widening roads, upgrading them or constructing more fly overs. One of the big fly overs, near the Wright-Patterson AF base has jet fighter planes stamped into the concrete, very cool :-)
South through Kentucky to Louisville is very hilly and green, there's masses of trees either side of the road and as far as we can see well beyond the road. We took a few off highway excursions, some were even intentional lol Kentucky really is very green. We stopped at a park by the Ohio River, looking across to Indiana for lunch. While there a barge toting coal went slowly along the river, perhaps through to the afore mentioned trains?
At one point on the highway there were a few deer grazing peacefully by the road on the median side and at another point we were swooped on by a large eagle of some sort. The only other wildlife we saw was road kill, a number of raccoons and a skunk :-(
Early on in the day we saw exits to Daniel Boone state park. We both watched the show as kids and sort of thought he was fictional but it would seem not.
Into Louisville and we found the Louisville Slugger field cos of course louisville is where the famous bats were and still are made.
It's a big sporting town, we checked out the massive Churchill Downs race track, home of the Kentucky Derby and the stadium for the Cardinals baseball team which comes complete with a trio of huge bats at the entrance. Speaking of huge bats, outside the factory that makes the sluggers is one massive, 6 story high bat.
When an exit ramp we needed to take was shut we accidentally went over the river to Indiana, oops lol no biggie apart from it being peak hour and pouring with rain. It took a little time to get back across and heading where we wanted to but was fairly painless.
Across from louisville uni are a number of classic frat houses, just like in the movies. We still don't get that concept.
It rained all through the evening. We started out aiming for KFC for dinner, when in Rome and all that lol Once there we realised we just couldn't face it and headed to Denny's and have to admit the steak and heap of fresh veg I had was awesome. Pete clearly loved his philly steak sandwich given he had a second one lol
