Ooook!! Now we're talking. Today's Spanish class was way more productive then yesterday! It helps that I went to bed at 9:30pm last night. I was really surprised at how much I learned today! I'm still not ready to start writing this blog in Spanish yet, but who knows. Maybe by the end of this tour I might give a shot and u folk will just have to google translate it. :P
So... a little bit about the city of Antigua. The city is made up a little bit like a grid. All the roads run parallel to each other and the are all made of cobble stone. It's considered a world heritage site so they are not allowed to make any real changes to the city. As such the city's plumbing is in dire need of an upgrade and since they can't do that without damaging the streets it remains mucho inferior. For example, in almost every bathroom you find a sign reminding you to not throw away your toilet paper in the toilet. That's right! If you wipe your ass... you put it in the garbage! I'm told it's because the sewers here can't handle it and their sewer system here often gets clogged up. :S It's been hard to remember to do that. Its become such a habit, but yeah... once it's in the toilet... there is NO WAY that I'm going to go fish it out!! lol
Also, during the Spanish invasion, the spaniards built 18 churches in Antigua. Ok so imagine an area about the seize of the Byward market. That's about the seize of Antigua. Now imagine if there were 18 churches downtown!! You end up having multiple churches on the block! Plus these aren't small churches... These suckers are like Cathedrals! It's insane! lol I used a photo of one of these churches for yesterday's post.
Today's blog photo is of the court yard at my school. ;)
I probably won't be posting anything for the next few days as my next little adventure is going to be Thursday. I'll climbing the Pacaya volcano after my class. It's a several mile long hike up to the top of the active volcano, but once there.. from what I'm told it's the most incredible experience. I'm not going spoil it by giving too many details but stay tuned! I should have a pretty interesting story to tell when I get back.
Adios amigos! :)
