We left Kununurra and headed west to the infamous Gibb River Road. This is a dirt road about 700klms long which has deep corregations and rocks the size of rock melons. The first 100klms is nice smooth bitumen road, then we have 16klms of gravel into El Questro Station with 2 water crossings for added excitement. When we reached the gravel, we stopped to drop all the tyre pressures to 30psi in order to soften the corregations. We shaked, rattled and rolled into El Questro. These stations are working cattle stations, however I would say they make more money from tourism as during the height of the tourist season El Questro can have up to 700 people camping on the property. They also have 8 exclusive villas that cost from $2250 per night.
Next day we headed for Emma Gorge a moderate 3.5klm round trip. Again a bit more rock scrambling but rewarded with a nice swimming hole inclusive of the resident fresh water crocodile, although he was nowhere to be found.
Early next morning (7.30am) we went to Zebedee Springs, a natural thermal spring on the El Questro property. We wanted to get there early to avoid the rush, but we managed to clear the pools when we informed everyone of the leeches which were present. We did spend about an hour in the pools and occasionally pulled off the odd leech. That night we drove to Pidgeon Hole lookout. The track was a bit rugged but the view was sensational.
Next morning Warren and I did a short rock scramble into Amelia gorge. The afternoon was spent with a cruise into the Chamberlain Gorge. This was pretty amazing with 90metre cliffs on each side.
We then headed off to Home Valley Station for a couple of nights about 50 klms to the south. We had decided that this was as far as we would travel down the Gibb River Road, the rocks and corregations are just too bad. These roads are not well suited to caravans, and whilst our van is probably capable it doesn't make sense to risk uneccessary damage. In the previous week there were also 2 fatalaties on this section of the road. 10klms short of Home Valley Station is the Pentecost River Crosssing. This crossing is shallow but about 100 metres wide, and there are saltwater crocs, so if you get stuck half way across your in a bit of trouble.
We arrived at Home Valley Station and the only damage to report was a missing screw out of my number plate. Warren on the other hand wasn't so lucky, he had completely lost one fog light and the other was hanging out ready to drop.
Next day we did a small hike to Bindoola Falls, pretty spot and a massive water course, but unfortunately dry this time of year. The afternoon was spent re hydrating. We are finding that the afternoons are simply too hot, so we try to avoid doing much. The mornings and late afternoon are perfect, but by 1.00pm its generally around 32 degrees.
We then headed back across the Pentecost River and stopped at the end of the corregations to re-inflate the tyres. We then headed for Kununurra to re-stock and prepare for the Bungle Bungles.
