Kalgoorlie known for its gold mining is still the wild wild west. We were perched on the 1st floor balcony of the pub at 3 o'clock in the afternoon casually sipping our refreshments catching up with a couple we have met on our travels. Suddenly we hear all this yelling and screaming from down below in the main street, after several minutes we travel down stairs and suss out what all the noise was about. The barmaid informs us that it was a punchup between two girls and not indigenous girls either, but two caucasian girls having a full on punch up. Welcome to Kalgoorlie.
The main attraction in Kalgoorlie is of course gold and this place has more than any other place on the planet. They have been mining here since 1893 and boy have they dug a big hole. We saw the pit or super pit as it is known, which is 3.9klm long by 1.6klm wide and 700metres deep. The tonka trucks look so small down the bottom of the pit but up close they are huge. We did the mine tour which was fantastic.
Also on the list was a visit to Questa Casa. This is Australia's oldest brothel having commenced operation in 1896. This was a very funny, interesting and informative presentation by the present owner of the establishment. We even got a tour of some of the rooms, let me just say there are some sick puppies out there and the girls thought it was very sleazy and the rooms not inviting at all.
We drove out to the the two up ring, the only place in Australia where two up is legal. The games are held every Sunday, so we missed it. Check out the photos of the shed, this place is barely standing and pretty rough.
We also visited the Mount Charlotte lookout which also happens to be where the water pipe comes into town. Water is pumped from near Perth some 500klms away. Without this water pipe which was built in 1923, Kalgoorlie would not exist. At one stage water was worth more than gold, so it was imperative that the solution to providing water was found. This pipeline was a major engineering feat for the time, and today still provides all the water to the town.
