What a day! Worked out the transport system and headed into town with a great plan of which trams to catch so we didn't have to walk too far. We bought a 24 hour ticket so we could jump on and off trams at will. As we left we noticed the streets were very quiet for a Monday and found out it was St Stephens Day, equivalent to Australia Day at home. Half the trams weren't running in town and the streets were all closed off along the river and were filled with a million people! After walking miles through the crowd in the stinking heat we gave in and spent the next 2 hours at a restaurant having lunch and drinks as it was in the shade. Decided to go on a river cruise so off we headed. We opted for the 2 hour trip, a bit of a rip off as the extra hour just means they leave you on Margaret Island for an hour and come back and pick you up. There was a great big festival on the island with a band etc so we decided to just have a drink there but unfortunately our hour was spent lining up at the bar. In the end we didn't even get a drink as had to go back to catch the boat. Stevie was not very happy as he was very thirsty and everybody kept pushing in front of him. Just made it back to the boat in time and back to town. Trams had stopped running again so another big walk as we were trying to get to a bar the Lonely Planet had voted best bar in the world. Eventually made it, and what a load of s***. It's on an old river boat and they were playing non stop dub step music. Maybe if we were 30 yrs younger it would have been better. The one good thing was the beer was cheap! Although there was still a lot of lining up involved. We thought the DJ's were Aaron and his mate Tyson! Believe it or not the tram ride home was simple, as everybody in Budapest is in town watching the fireworks. Oh well we will have to get up in the morning and go to the sites again. We are expecting an easier day on our legs.
