Headed off from Dresden after a coffee and onto Czech Republic. Had a bit of a scare for a while as the car was getting very low on fuel and no service stations in sight. Got to a town so decided to let ken the gps find us one. Luckily it was only 3km away so figured if we ran out before we got there at least it wasn't too far to walk (for Stevie). Made it no problems and what a lovely little town. Very close to the Czech border and lots of ski fields around as well as mountain biking etc for the summer. Continued our drive through lovely scenery and quite a few hair pin turns and 13% gradients. Got to Karlovy Vary and our lodgings are beautiful. Top of the hill and lovely little apartment with fantastic views from the balcony. Karlovy Vary is a spa town built on a mineral spring, renowned for its healing properties. It is full of hotels offering packages with special spa treatments, some of which are recommended by medical practitioners. Walked down to the town (very steep hill, must be at least 100% gradient) and went for a stroll. Obviously the Russians believe in the healing qualities as all we saw were Russians over the age of 70. Certainly not a backpackers destination. Had a taste of the magic water (tasted like s***) so had to have some beers to cleanse the palate. There are little fountains all along the main street coming from the springs and people walking along drinking the magic water, luckily there are lots of public toilets too! Tackled the mountain (by Perth standards) home and luckily there was a restaurant about 3/4 up the hill. Stopped for a lovely meal that was a great surprise as menus only in Russian, Czech or German. We went for the German one but still had no idea. Up the rest of the hill for an early night to try and catch some Olympics. Missed the Stingers water polo bronze last night but did follow the description online. Well done girls! Now Jane can get some sleep back in Melbourne.
