Steph's Asia Trip
Arrived back in Bangkok on Friday with Tom. We'd had a great time on Ko Tao, although it was a bit strange because it's the end of the season, so it was much quieter than I remembered it. The weather was good and we did lots of sunbathing (tom got burnt!! I seemed to have perfected the art of not getting too toasted in the sun!! Genius!!) and we also went snorkelling, which was really good - it's so amazing to see all the fish and they swin really close to you! Also - managed not to die or even get injured on the dirt bike (due to tom's accomplished driving!)
The night train to bangkok was fine - and we arrived early. We've been staying at a very nice hotel (the same one I stayed at with the other Tom) which had air-con and a pool - a welcome contrast to the basic hut on Ko Tao. Took Tom to see some of the sights that i'd seen before and spent yesterday in Lumphini Park. It's a bit like Bangkok's equivalent of Hyde Park. We cheated a bit because we bought sandwiches from Subway to have in our packed lunch, but I think it was excusable because they don't really have sandwiches over here! The park was lovely and we went on the paddle boats on the pond. There were huge lizzards and turtles in the water!! No swans or ducks or geese like in England.
Lumphini Park is funny in the evenings, we watched several aerobics classes that take place in the park every night (for free!!) and there were sooooooo many people at them!! One that we watched had 3 instructors there were that many people attending!! It was great! And there are also weight machines and outdoor gym equipment in the park - trying to encourage the population to get fit I guess. I think their helath minister also jogs in the park - just to keep the press happy I would imagine!!
Last night we went to the cinema - was also amusing. We saw Snakes on a Plane - with Samuel L Jackson - has to be the worst film I've seen in a long time - but it's so bad that it's done with a sense of humour, so it made us laugh. At the begining of the films in Thailand you have to stand to honour the King - that was very amusing - they played the national anthem and there were loads of pictures of the King's life on the screen - including one that's everywhere which really irritates me because it's got a huge bead of sweat dripping off his nose - surely you would have edited that!!!
Tom left this morining at 5am and we were getting slightly annxious because the minibus was late and the Khosan Rd transforms into a brothel at night!! And full of ladyboys who are very curious to look at!! Some of the Thai behaviours are very wierd!
Parents arrive tomorrow - staying in a really nice hotel in Silom (that's the posh bit of town) and it's right next to the MBK centre where I had all that nice food!!! Am looking forward to seeing them!
Next journal entry will probably be in a week or so from Cambodia.
Hope everyone is well, that the summer was good and that work/uni etc are going ok. Just think - my summer lasts until Decmeber 17th!!! Ha Ha!!
