Steph's Asia Trip
Went to the Pak Khlong Talat flower market today - was incredible!! The photos don't really do it justice. For anyone who likes flowers (especially my mum and Tom's (Batho) mum)- it was visually like flower pick'n'mix!! I loved it!! So many flowers and huge flower arrangements and miles of ribbons and wrapping paper and bows - very girly!! I was the only Westerner there I think - lots of locals which I enjoyed - I much prefer the real markets to the tourist ones - much more interesting.
Actually, Bangkok is really good for markets - so if you like women's-shopping and spending hours walking round just lookiong at stuff (the kind of shopping that infuriates men!! Poor souls - they have no appreciation for spectator shopping!) then Bangkok is the place for you!
Lots of flower photos - sorry - I'll put them in separate album so the boys don't have to look at silly flowers and ribbons!
Going to the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi on Monday (at least I'm going to try). Going to try and buy a book this afternoon about it - it was built by prisoners of war in WW2 - the book is called The Bridge on the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle (apparently there was a film too) - don't know if i'll have much luck getting the book.
I'll stay there for 2 days and see the national park - lots of waterfalls! Then I'm planning to go to Ko Tao for a relxaing few days on the beach! Getting a bus to the train station, then a 6 hour train then a 6 hour overnight ferry - I get to sleep on a board on the floor!! How exciting!! The only reason I'm putting myself through that is because the train and ferry times are really gay and don't coincide, so i can either sleep on a board and not have to pay for accommodation that night, or i have to stay at the ferry town and get a ferry the next day which is expensive and not very interesting. Also the night ferry is half the price - probably due to the hellish transit conditions! I'm a hardened traveller now!
I'll arrive in Ko Tao on Thursday at 6am!! Just in time to find somewhere to stay and then start to work on my tan. I'm peeling so much at the moment - it's gross!! Never peeled this much before! Must be horrible to be a spider or a snake, where you shed all your skin! Hopefully it won't leave patchy tan/white skin - that could be embarassing on the beach.
Lots of rain here at the moment - coming through the ceiling above the computer next to me!! Just told the people in charge - they're moving the computer. I like the rain - we had a great storm last night - thunder and everything!!
Off to try and book my train for next Wednesday in advance - learnt my lesson from the Bangkok experience!! Hopefully won't get too wet on my way to the bus stop.
