100 Days - Yes this trip is everything we hoped and expected. The challenges, the thrills, meeting new people and seeing new places.
The ride from Milwaukee to Racine, was horrible. We knew the forecast was not the best but it was not the worst it could be. Seas were supposed to be 1-3 feet, with a 5 second period. This would produce giant swells. The problem was the wind was from the North East, coming from our side and stern. The seas were 2 - 4 foot with several 5+ foot added in. They were smooth swells but they were coming from both the side and the stern. It made for a very long run.
We spent three days in Racine WI. Reefpoint Marina is a top notch marina, the docks are in great shape, a pool, two hot tubs, well stocked ship store, and a good restaurant.
Racine is known for a tasty pastry called a Kringle. Kringle's are a delicious pastry that has a flaky, buttery crust and a sweet filling. We got a cinnamon kringle, and it was out of this world.
Our first stop was the Racine Zoo. The zoo is located along the lake in a residential neighborhood. We were very surprised at both the size and quality of it. The best exhibit in the zoo was the kangaroos and wallabies. You went thru a double gate enclosure into a small park like setting. The only thing between us and the kangaroos and wallabies was a split rail fence. Had they wanted to, they could have come right up to us. They also have a Giraffe Experience, where you can feed them. Unfortunately the timing did not work for us to do it.
We wanted to tour the SC Johnson headquarters designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, but because of Covid they are no longer offering them. (Maybe next time????)
Back at the marina we had docktails with several loopers that we had not met before Subject To Change, Eleanor Grace (New loopers 2 stops in), War Eagle, and Gold Looper Grand Finale, whose home port is Racine.
Racine also has a very nice Heritage Museum that we toured. We have found that the electric bikes have given us much more range when we are exploring and finding places to visit.
Steve and Jane (Sabbatical) also caught up to us in Racine, after a rough 45 mile ride. It is good to see them again. They are scheduled to be in Chicago on Monday, where we will see them again.
Tomorrow we will be heading to North Point Marine in Winthrop IL. This will be our last stop before Chicago.
