Started day by taking hike to find a geocache, this time successfully! Lovely hike through rainforest with huge trees. On our way to Queenstown- another driving day. Booked a bus and boat tour of Milford Sound for tomorrow. Stopped at Curly Tree, a family fish operation down a small dirt road off the highway. Tried a local west coast delicacy called whitebait fish patties to see if we wanted to buy some for supper-which we will NOT be doing. Basically it was like thin white worms with eyes that they mix with egg and fry up-really gross!! Stopped in Haas for picnic lunch-not much there- no one really felt like eating yet as we were all still grossed out by the whitebait in our stomachs-felt like they were swimmimg around in there! Drove through Haast Pass towards Lake Wanaka, beautiful crystal clear lake, 4th largest in NZ. Huge fields of sheep and gorgeous, lush vineyards along the way. Stopped in Cromwell at fresh orchard market. Bought homemade NZ icecream, fudge, dried fruits, nuts and fresh squeezed apple-orange juice. Rugged mountain road from Cromwell to Queenstown with huge deep gorges- another section where lots of knitting was done! Checked into the Top 10 Holiday Park Queenstown Creeksyde. Really neat spot, quaint locale, would not know you were in the middle of a city. Pete cooked a delicious chicken stir fry for supper. Another early night!
