Up early to go to the Otago Farmer's Market at the famous Dunedin Railway Station. Weather is starting to get warmer as we are heading north and it is another beautiful sunny day. Sarah and Peter's friend said that this is the best fall they have had for years, usually it is rainy and cold. We have been so lucky with the weather! Had bacon butties at the market for breakfast- a NZ bacon sandwich with onions, relish, ketchup and mustard-really delicious. Market was huge with lots of fresh goods-bought a bunch of stuff. Went to Larnach Castle on the Otago Peninsula. It was started in 1871 and 200 workmen laboured for 3 years before it was completed in 1874. The castle gardens were spectacular with rock gardens, topiarys, paths, pergolas, native trees and huge varied species flower gardens. The former stable is used for lodging and the original stone floor is still in pristine condition. We also found 3 geacaches in the castle area. The maid's quarters which are now partially intact ruins were a really neat area to explore. Talked with a NZ lady out riding her chestnut Arabian who gave us authentic knowledge about the area. Now headed to Christchurch for the night. Tranzalpine train booked for the morning. Stopped at Moreaki Boulders for picinc lunch. Hundreds of marble-like boulders are strewn alomg the beach like turtle eggs. Formed 65 million years ago by a layering process similar to how pearls form in oysters. I rather like the Maori legend which says that they were food baskets that washed ashore from the wreck of the ancestor's canoe that made its epic voyage to NZ. Drove thru to Chrsitchurch with a quick stop in Ashburton for supper. Everyone had told us that KFC was better in NZ but we didn't find much difference. Arrived at Amber Park Holiday Park for the night.
