Soongies' Great Adventure
We left at 7:30 am from Tembo Campsite - Lake Victoria, source of the River Nile, was very flat and calm this morning, a change from yesterday evening's windy waves.
Stopped in Musoma Village to get some Tanzanian Shillings out and for some people to get SIM cards. SIM cards took forever – 5 people wanted SIM cards and there were lots of complications (most of them didn't even work!). In the village, Kate, Bev and Roxy bought a jug for $1 so they could pee at night in the tent in Serengeti - we were told that we would be camping in the Serengeti where there were no fences to protect us from the wild animals! Flo said they often had hyenas and lions roaming around at night - she recommended going to the toilets in pairs at night.
It took about 1.5 hours to the Serengeti (Maasai word means Endless Plains, is the same size as Northern Ireland). Entered through Ndabaka Entrance Gate. Had lunch before we entered with lots of monkeys. Some cheeky monkeys entered the truck when we were preparing lunch and stole 4 apples off Glenn and Bev!
On the game drive to Ngiri Campsite, we saw:
1. Wildebeest
2. Rock Hyrax
3. Zebra
4. Waterbuck
5. Thompson's Gazelle
6. Impala
7. Cape Buffalo
8. Hartebeest
9. Giraffe
10. Elephant
11. Hyena
12. Jackal
13. Bustard
14. Crocodiles
15. Hippopotamus
16. Varvet Monkey
17. Baboon
18. Ostrich
19. Eagle
20. Warthog
21. Mongoose
22. Marabou Stork
Set up our tents, showered and had dinner (rice with beef stew) around a fire. We were all trying to see animals in the night time before we went to sleep. Carlo thought he had seen some eyes in the distance but Dan just pointed his torch and said that it was a campsite. Dan did find 2 buffalo nearby and something else running in the grass nearby.
