Russ and I left Becky and Rob and Tom to lie in whilst Russ and I walked to Mount Iron and walked the short 45 mins to the summit. A popular walk with locals and tourists. A beautiful day with beautiful views 360 when reaching the summit. Views of both Lake Wanaka and Hawea and the surrounding mountains.
We returned to find the kids up and about around noon with some leaflets on what to do. We decided as now 1300 to do a boat cruise to one of the 4 islands you can land at on the lake. Mou Waho island which has a lake on the island which has an island in the lake, on the island on the lake!!
Guided tours were were fully booked so Russ and I went to the very very informative iSite shop on the front. We booked a water taxi to the island. This was better than expected. Just us and 4 others, the captain gave us interesting facts about the geography of the area and history of Wanaka which I wasn't expecting. It takes around 35 mins to the island which is out of site from the town itself. it's a great way to see the Lake and the surrounding mountain peaks, some still, with snow on them. Extremely picturesque though hard to capture on film.
Arriving at the island we walk up to the lake on the island, a bit steep 30 min climb. One area on Rocks to sit where locals came prepared in costumes to jump in and swim,
we ate ate our picnic and then headed a further 10 min walk to the very top of the island to be rewarded with fabulous views. A native Buff Weka at the top keeping us entertained.
Catching the taxi back we then head to,rooms for swim wear and drive around to Dublin Bay which the captain had told us was shallow and slightly warmer part of the lake. It's mostly tarmac some sandy and very sandy when close to the lake. Tom and Rob took the challenge of wading the shallow ridge which took a while! Bec, Russ and I enjoyed the warmer waters watching!
It was 14 degrees the captain had told us, refreshing!
Very strange that the whole bay bay was super soft sand.
Around 1845 now we head back for change and table at Gourmet Kitchen for their signature dish, NZ lamb. Tom enjoyed his first mushroom risotto. A fabulous meal.
Today was a super day weather wise too nice, comfortable heat. Warm breeze.
Returning to the motel the boys and Bec star gaze over a beer in the motel garden. I retire to bed!
