As we write this we are pretty exhausted. We left Lake Atitlan at 3pm yesterday and after a boat, shuttle bus and coach we finally arrived in the town which is base camp for Tikal Ruins at 6am!! 15 hours!!! But we didn't stop there. We dumped our bags at a hostel, had a shower and caught a bus at 8am to Tikal Ruins, an hour or so away. After a coffee we psyched ourselves up for what we knew would be one of the most interesting days of our lives!
As soon as we entered National park howler monkeys were swinging across the canopy above us and weird animals Sarah and I named 'tree dogs' also making there way through the trees. The ruins are really in the jungle and it took us about 30minutes to see any signs of the Mayans. But all the pictures in the world had not prepared us for the first temple we saw. We came around a corner and towering 47m above us was 'The Great Jaguar Temple'. We made our way around it and soon found ourselves in the Gran Plaza. We had seen all the photos before but it was amazing to finally be the ones taking the photos.
The highlight of the day was climbing 'Temple IV - Two Headed Serpent'. It is the tallest of all the Tikal Ruins reaching 70m. The view from the top was incredible, we were above the jungle canopy and could see other Temples poking out in the distance.
We arrived at 9:30am and didn't leave until 3pm because we spent time sitting amongst many of the ruins. Definitely a highlight of our trip!
But another highlight in the day was getting some of our money back from a dodgy tour guide. When we arrived in the morning we bought tickets to Tikal and Belize (where we head to tomorrow). Whilst in the ruins I was doing the maths on what we paid and I knew we got ripped off. So on the way back into town I got the bus driver to drop Sarah and I off at the agency's office. I explained the situation and that they owed me $16...which doesn't sound like much but it's a nights accommodation.
Long story short the guy came back to the office, I argued with him for a while, he only wanted to give back $10 but we knew he was a dirty thief so we didn't budge. I told Sarah what was going on and she piped up over my shoulder and yelled at him. All I know is...we left that office with $16:)
However, we now don't think our bus is picking us up tomorrow for Belize because we booked it with him;) P.S His name is Enrique and he works for San Juan tours, Flores...just in case;)
