After breakfast this morning, we spoke to Shawn the owner of Rorkes Drift Lodge to get directions to Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Park. We discovered that a snake had bitten their cat earlier in the morning. Unfortunately, they did not see what kind of snake so they were unable to give it anti venom. Shawn thought it would survive. I hope so as it was a cross between a domestic cat and an African wildcat - a very beautiful animal. We had 2 choices for routes to take. The shorter route meant we had to travel over 2 dirt roads. The second meant we had to drive 100 km extra. We chose the shorter route and found the roads were not too bad. Lots of fantastic scenery. We entered the park at the south end which meant we had to drive through the entire park to get to Hilltop Lodge where we will stay the night. The first road we took was a dead end road but led to a beautiful area where we saw some elephants, Cape buffalo and Impala. The drive through the park yielded few animal sightings, I think mainly because the park is so dry. Every stream, waterhole and river was dry. The park does not seem to have water pumps at the water holes. We arrived at the Lodge about 3:15pm, checked in and discovered the lodge has severe water problems. We will probably not be able to shower in the morning. We had a bit of a rest and then went for a game drive. Jean was very happy as we sighted 3 different pairs of rhino. The 3d pair was right on the paved road heading back to the Lodge. We had to be out of the park by 7:00pm so we were unable to spend a lot of time looking. We will get up tomorrow at 5:00am to do an early game drive and hopefully we will see more animals. This part of the park seems to be not as dry. After our drive, we will go to St. Lucia.
