Dave’s Travel Blog
One of the reasons for coming to Giants Castle was to see the cave paintings done by the San people about 5000 years ago. After breakfast, we started our hike to the caves. The weather has turned hot again and we were both very warm. We eventually got into the forest where it was a little cooler. The caves were really just indentations caused by outcroppings of rock. The tour was very interesting. Some of the paintings were quite clear but many are fading due to weather and rock erosion. The young lady tour guide did a great job of explaining the different rock paintings. Coming back, we hiked along the river trail which was flat and there was a bit of a breeze. We met a young couple from Amsterdam who have been in South Africa for 6 months working in Johannesberg. They are holidaying before heading back home. It was interesting talking to them about their experiences. They said they soon got used to the almost seige state one has to live in but really missed not being able to go for walks or go bicycling in the evening. When we got back to the chalet, I lay down and Jean was reading. I think I fell asleep and was rudely awakened to Jean screaming "GET OUT GET OUT!" A baboon had come through the door and had rushed over to where our food was, grabbed a package of cookies and went flying out the door. We were a bit shaken up as it was quite large. I could hear crunching sounds so we went outside and there was the baboon chewing down on the cookies! It has been roaming around outside barking very loudly.
