Zvi Josef's Travels
After an only so-so night sleep (rock hard bed, furniture constantly being moved in the restaurant over our suite), we had a decent breakfast and hired a taxi for 6 hours, to take us around Chennai.
Little did we know, that our driver was obviously not local, thus we had to direct him EVERYWHERE. It was so surreal - the two of us, giving our taxi driver directions in downtown Chennai. :)
Today was VERY hot (38 degrees) and humid (90%) day,and we sweated like never before.
To top it all, Chennai turned out to be a very boring city for tourists.
We visited the St. George fort, assuming we'd find a real fort, but no - it was a fort turned into governmental offices and military recruiting school ("No photo, sir!").
We asked our driver to take us to the famous lighthouse, and he made a mistake and took us to a new (and ugly) lighthouse, instead.
We then visited the nice looking St. Thome basilica and started looking for the Theosophic society HQ park. The place turned out to be a little park with various replicas of religious buildings, which was nice (although the guard begged us to bribe him on the way out...).
We then asked out driver to take us to the high court of Chennai, to see the ancient lighthouse, but when we got there, he was told by one of the guards the lighthouse is not open to the public. <SIGH>
We then went to see St. Andrew's Kirk, which is a very nice looking church in the northern part of town. The place was almost deserted (with the exception of some gardeners). When the guard of the church heard we were from Israel, he was very excited and blessed us and invited us into the church. We were all alone in the beautiful church. The guard invited us to join the mass next Sunday, too. :)
From there, we went on to a local market to buy some souvenirs and headed back to the hotel - exhausted.
After a quick shower and a couple of drinks and nibbles in the club lounge, we moved to another suite, this time - a quiet one (hopefully...). :)
We're soon off to dinner.
Basically, we've had enough of India, so tomorrow we're going to Bangalore for a day and then we're off to the Maldives, for a week.
Yay! :)))
