Shaun on the Road
Writing this after a great weekend, but I'll tell you a little bit about life in Quito. During classes, which are going very well, I went with my instructor to the Ecuator. There is the official site, with a big monument and complex. The whole thing is very touristy and kinda stuffy, but you gotta go there, just to say that you have been.
Right next door, however, is the mom and pop specially. Their claim to faim is that they say that the official marking is wrong and that GPS has proven that they have the right line. They have a much more interesting museum (for much cheaper too, I might add) and some cool exhibits. One of which is really worth mentioning. They have a basin that can be picked up and moved. They pour water down the drain of this basin and it falls straight down. They move the basin one meter south of the Ecuator and it spins clockwise. They move the basin one meter north of the Ecuator and it spins counter clockwise. Coolest thing ever.
But, I am in Banos right now, and just had a great two days. Yesterday I took a bike trip from Banos to the nearby town of Puyo which is 61 km away (mostly, and not totally, downhill). It was fantastic. I saw so many waterfalls, I got sick of seeing waterfalls. There was also tunnels that the road went through, some up to 1 km in length. I made sure to avoid those, but I went through one and almost fell over. It is very difficult, not to mention scarry, to drive in the dark with only the distant light and the other end of the tunnel guiding you. I biked all 61 km in about 4 and a half hours, including stops to see the waterfalls.
Today I went hiking with people that I met yesterday. They were actually Canadians from Fernie BC and knew (kind of) my friend Nathan Sikes because one of them was from Smithers BC. Just FYI Nathan, his name was Sandy. Anyway, we went hiking together and saw an active volcano spewing its smoke. The whole town has been on red alert for like 4 years now, but everyone just ignores the warnings now. Hope everything is okay for them. Anyway, I had a great weekends and I'll keep the updates coming.
