Tuesday 19th October - We left Mojave at 6am in the dark. I'm blaming the dark for the reason I turned round a corner on the wrong side of the road, almost giving both Dai and the guy in the oncoming car a hear attack.
We drove about 3 hours to get to the coast at California and then drove just over 100 miles along Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway. The views while driving along this road are amazing, it would be a great ride to do on a motorbike, theres not a lot of room for error, so would make for an exciting ride.
On reaching Monterey we dropped our rucksacks at the hotel and then drove for around 30 minutes to Laguna Seca race track. While we were looking around and watching a load of people in Mazda's flying around the track, we got chatting to some of the people in pits who then arranged with Jim the track supervisor for us to drive around the track following him in his pickup once the Mazda track day had finished. We hung around for around an hour then I followed Jim out onto the track and drove 2 laps of the race circuit in our hire car. For those of you who are familiar with Laguna Seca the corkscrew is much steeper than you think, you can see none of the track as you go over it, as advised by Jim you have to just aim the car at the third tree on the otherside of the track untill the curb comes back into view. I don't think I'll mention this to the hire company when I take it back.
