Allo again…today started out pretty boring and got progressively more entertaining.School on Wednesdays is very boring for me because I don't get to teach.Peter likes to come in because he has all of his students today.First we had a single period of 10th grade.Like I said they've become my favorite so I wasn't too bored in there. They were reviewing because they have a test on Friday.I really need to videotape that class sometime next week. It's so entertaining!Vanessa was trying to explain how she remembered one of the circle geometry rules as the squiggly line rule while Alcides and Dan kept rolling their eyes at her even though she was getting the answers before them and screaming ha when they got an answer. And Kornelia is busy staring at the property posters on the wall and calling all of the circle geometry properties by number (which I never remember), while the Australian exchange student is journaling in German and trying to help Kornelia. Then Hafeni is punching Dan every two seconds when he shouts out the answer before Hafeni has the chance to figure it out. It's utter chaos at some moments, but they all seem to be having fun while learning and they listen when I talk so I don't mind. Then we had a double period of eighth grade in which they again just reviewed for their test on Friday and went over the requirements for a project that is due next week.Next, we had a single period of 9th grade where they started part 1 of their test.During break we just sat and drank tea and talked about the differences between American and Namibian students.Lastly, we had a double period of 11th grade where they were learning how to divide polynomials. It blew their minds at first, but they soon got the hang of it.They also have a test on Friday.Tomorrow and Friday look like they are going to be very boring for me with everyone taking tests. At least in America I was always kept busy with questions or grading their binders or other papers…haha I say that now, until I have to go back to that and all I want to do is sit and relax while they take their test.
Wednesday is another early off day so Hopson picked me up around 11:45 and I came home and just relaxed. The stupid washing machine takes like 2 hours to wash your clothes and it was toward the end of the spinning cycle when I had to go to PAY and I wanted to hang them out to dry.So of course I thought I would be able to just turn off the power and take the clothes out.Apparently the washing machine has a mind of its own.It would not let me have my clothing. It kept the door locked. The only way for me to get my clothing back was to start it again…fortunately it had a rinse and spin setting, but that still meant that I wasn't going to get my clothing on the line until after dark when I got back from PAY.Boo!It's the little things you take for granted!
At PAY no one really needed help and I started to get really tired. Finally someone needed help with their genetics homework so I worked on that for awhile and missed an important announcement about sports.Haha I figured it out, but was rather confused at first.I played keep it up for a little while, until Megan came back with the bread.Since I passed out bread yesterday, I had to help make the sandwiches today.Opening the can of jelly was another fiasco! We both didn't know how to use the weird lever they gave us as a can opener. After poking several holes in the can, Megan went to get Harry to help us, while I continued experimenting.I finally figured it out!!It's honestly the most unnatural can opener ever!It doesn't make any sense. It's just a little semi circle with the blade facing in toward the handle, but it cuts on the round part more efficiently then it does where the blade is.Anyway we made PB&J sandwiches with the 6 loaves of bread, which didn't take too long and then went back out and joined in sports.
A new volunteer showed up, who turned out to be an intern for MiniPAY last year and just couldn't stay away. She's from Germany. She was completely surprised at how many volunteers there are now because when she was interning they were apparently begging for volunteers.Unfortunately, all of us except for Megan, Sarah, and Valerie leave by next Friday. That's gonna be a big shock!!As I said before, when camp is over it sometimes takes awhile for us to get all of the kids out because they don't want to go home.Today was one of those days, but the volunteers were having just as much fun playing basketball and just goofing around.
Then it came time to go home.It was the most hysterical car ride I've ever been on.MJ has left for Canada so Harry is in charge of the van.The van seats 8 people….we had 14 volunteers + Harry who needed a ride home today.PAY is very good to their volunteers and interns and always tries to take them home instead of trying to catch a taxi in Katutura.Sooooo, we had 2 people in the passenger seat, 3 people in the second row with one lying across their laps and another with his feet out the window, 4 people squished in the back seat and 1 person in the boot.(2 volunteers decided they would take a taxi home)However, Harry decided he would probably get pulled over if someone had their feet out the window and Sam told Dave that there was plenty of room in the boot with her!So Dave moved to the boot and soon realized that the only way he could fit is if he squatted for the entire trip and continually hit his head on the back windshield. The space between the backseat and the back latch is probably about 6 inches…really not enough room for one person to sit comfortably.Plus, it's an old van so the latch pops open a lot.Dave and Samantha were holding on to the back of our seat for dear life.To ease the claustrophobia and the uncomfortable seating, the five people from the UK started singing drinking songs. The first was 99 bottle of beer on the wall, but it was different then the way we sing it in the US.After they got to 90 they stopped. And soon the songs got progressively funnier and dirtier. It was hysterical!! JI couldn't believe some of the lyrics.Meanwhile, we're driving on the highway to the first stop to drop people off.Around this same time there are always huge trucks on the road that carry employees home and they are always completely packed with people hanging out the back. They were taking out their cell phones to "capture us" because we had 13 people in a small 8 passenger vehicle.
Dropping everyone off took forever because everyone was in a different corner of Windhoek. Here, when someone asks were you live to drop you off, you give them the general locale, not the street name. The city is split into different areas with specific names: Luxury Hill (where I live), Windhoek West (where I teach), Katutura (where PAY is), Windhoek North, Klein Windhoek, Dorado Park, Hochland Park…etc. It is assumed that if they get you there, you can walk to where you need to be.However, Harry takes everyone at least a block from their house.I, however, was in the area of where he needed to be after he dropped everyone off so I was last. And he had to go back to the British house to use their internet to send an email before his meeting, so I got to go back and talk to them again.LolSome of them work for Score! which is a group that goes to the Katutura schools and helps them with their PE classes during the school day. They had taken videos all day long of the kids playing soccer.Today, they had 100 kids in their PE class and only the 3 of them.It was funny to watch the video because they'd be filming trying to narrate and then they'd scream and say something about them being like Mufasa in the Lion King as the 100 kids turned and started running straight for Dave with the camera.Half the time you couldn't see the soccer ball because there were so many kids around it.Imagine a 50 v 50 game of soccer…you honestly can't until you've seen it.
Now I'm blogging before I go to the Windhoek Warehouse. There is a famous Namibian musician playing there tonight, so we have to get there somewhat early to get seats. It should be a lot of fun.We listened to his music throughout dinner.Have a good night everyone!
Miss you and love you,
Shannon
