After that we started on our first real tourist attraction...the Great Ocean Road (GOR). The area is known for its powerful sea, steep cliffs and ever changing coastline due to rapid erosion. We stopped off at all the usual spots and enjoyed seeing the coast. Most famous is the 12 Apostles, which Shane was unimpressed by, primarily because there aren't 12 of them....more like 8, 10 if you are being very generous! From here we headed along to our campsite, the weather wasn't the best so there was no point hanging around hoping for a good sunset!
In the morning we woke up with great plans to finish the GOR, the main highlights on this stretch are the beaches and the amount of koalas there are....what we soon realised was that we had ticked that koala box the minute we stepped out of the camper as one of them had decided to breakfast right above us!! Was great to see it so close up and without any crowds....then to add to it a kookaburra flew right up onto a branch next to the van!!! So the day was off to a flying start! Again the weather was a bit patchy so we took in most of it from inside the van, getting to our campground early to relax for the afternoon and dodge the showers!!!
In the morning we headed to Bells Beach, we just happened to be passing while the Rip Curl Pro was on so it seemed a great opportunity to see how the world's best handle themselves on the waves! We weren't disappointed...there were some crazy moves!!! You can check out the videos online, but you can certainly see the appeal of the sport...and how they stay on their boards is beyond us!
