After a very brief stopover, due to a slight lack of planning on our behalf, in Jakarta we started our Asian adventure in Borneo, Malaysia.
We flew into Kota Kinabalu late at night so it was the next day before we were able to explore and plan...so off we set to check out our options and have a stroll around the waterfront. Unfortunately for some reason we seemed to have left our sense of direction in Australia so we spent a good while wandering around and trying to get back to the hostel, so that was the morning done!!!
We decided to head off the next morning to go down towards Sepilok, which is where the orang-utan sanctuary is. Our hostel reliably informed us that the only morning bus there was at 7.30am...so we were up bright and early, headed to the bus terminal which is just out of town, only to find out that they go about every hour, so really there was no need for such an early start!!!
Our accommodation down in Sepilok was a real gem...totally different from anywhere else we have stayed...it was within a deer reserve and park, which made a great setting. Not only this but they liked to use recycled materials whenever possible....for instance the sinks were all woks!!!Class!!! It was from here we headed to the orang-utan sanctuary, one of only 4 in the world. You are given the usual talk on arrival that there's no promise that they will come to feeding time, as its only meant to supplement their diet, as they are getting them ready to head back into the jungle. But we were in luck and got to see a good few of Phil's cousins (Shane's description of course...Phil can tell he's only jealous!!!) They really are super cute, especially the mother and baby we got to see, and very human like....we share 96.4% of our genes with them!!!Bit mad!
From there we headed down the road to the rainforest discovery canter, walked along there canopy walk...it was nice to see but we probably should have followed the Lonely Planet's advice to avoid the midday heat as all the animals go into hiding then!!!
Our plan was to head back to the sanctuary for the afternoon feeding but the weather had other ideas with a mighty rainstorm soaking us to the bone!! So instead we sheltered in a bus stop and then called the taxi to go home!!!
