On the day we arrived at Cowley Beach 3/8 the weather was overcast, cold, windy and rain was on its way again, we booked in for 3 nights, planning to move into Mission Beach.
The next morning we woke to a beautiful cool morning and decided that we would have a look at the other seaside options before making a move.
We spent that day looking at Mission Beach, being South Mission, Wongaling and North Mission and decided that making the move was of no advantage as none of the caravan spots were directly on the beach and that we would extend our stay at Cowley Beach for another 6 days.
Little did we know that this would be our home for the next 3 weeks.
We enjoyed some amazing days venturing out, seeing Tully, Kurrimine, Bingil Bay,Innisfail, Etty Bay, Flying Fish Bay and enjoying a few off the wood at the El Arish and Silkwood pubs and some great lunches. The Sugar Museum was very good and gave a lot of historical details of the Sugar industry of which we saw endless crops in various stages of development.
The sensational fresh fruit especially the pineapples, paw paws and of course Bananas, which were so cheap on roadside stalls and again endless crops. Green grassy paddocks with my favorite Moo Cows and their cheeky friends the Cattle Ibis settled in amongst the sugar and bananas.
This part of Queensland is rich in produce and land is green, green and greener set in the foreground of the Misty Mountains.
We spent many beautiful hours walking along our beautiful beach either heading north to Cairns or south towards Dunk Island (of which we could see from here), enjoying nibbles and drinks and totally chilling out. The town site set on the northside had about 40 house some of which were clearly holiday homes, so local traffic was almost non existent, the occasional Blackhawk would fly over and so close you could almost touch them, there is a Commonwealth Army training camp right on the beach there and walked past it several times. To the south the mouth of the Johnstone River flowed into the ocean-crocs do live in there!
A few fish were caught off the beach but past weather for the last 2 years has not been favourable for the beach anglers and boatees. The caravan park was friendly and catered for about 30 vans and under new management was seeing a new fresh approach.
Whilst it was hard to leave this wonderful holiday place it was time to move on and on the 4th September we began our next venture on our journey.
From the great outdoors,
