Another fine day in Seville. Our hotel is in barrio Santa Cruz which is the old Jewish ghetto, complete with white washed buildings and very narrow twisty streets. Pedestrians must duck into doorways when cars come down the street. Navigation is very challenging because the barrio is not laid out on a grid and you have no perspectives, so it is navigation by dead reckoning. Eventually you will pop out onto a square with a church that you can find on your map and you make course corrections. We visited the Plaza Espana which is a huge plaza and building which was constructed for the 1929 exposition which was held in Seville. There are beautiful gardens surrounding the building and all of the individual regions of Spain are represented in special alcoves that have ceramic benches and ceramic maps of the region. Spanish tourists come to the bench of the region of their home to have their picture taken. We had lunch on a terrace over looking the river, watching paddlers and tour boats passing by. Today is Saturday and the city has a relaxed feel, people are out in the public spaces enjoying the fine weather and having a meal or a glass of wine. We also toured the the Alcazare de Seville, which dates from 913 AD. This palace was constructed by Moors ( Muslims ) which ruled this portion of Spain well into the 13th century. The buildings and the construction techniques are stunning when you consider what was happening in the rest of Europe at the time. The Alcazar was built upon Roman ruins......it is sometimes difficult to wrap your brain around more than 2000 years of history in one building site.
