Early morning departure by tour bus to Granada to visit the Alhambra. The 2.5 hour bus ride took us thru rolling hills of olive trees, lots and lots of olive trees. Spain is the world largest producer of olive oil. As we neared Granada we were able to catch views of the Sierra Nevada mountains with a new dusting of snow.......these are the original Sierra Nevada's not the imitations in California...... some Hollywood creations. The Alhambra defies superlatives, as do most UNESCO world heritage sites. Again it is a moorish walled city with stunning buildings and architectural detailing. We spent 2.5 hours touring the site with a local guide.........interestingly Granada was conquered by the Christians in 1492 and Charles the 5th ( Carlos cinco ) built a palace within the Alhambra walls. It is built in the 16th century euro tradition and it looks kind of pathetic compared to what the Moors were doing 800 years earlier. Carlos was turning the Alhambra into a euro ghetto.......it's only my opinion, I may be wrong.
