Omar got up early to ensure I have a last good breakfast at his place before I leave for my trekking. We quickly weigh my backpack and see it is close to 16kg, close enough to the recommended 14kg according to our host. At 7h30 I get picked up by the bus and it seems both Zsuzsanna and Joost are on this same bus already.
We arrive at the entrance of 'Parque Nacional de las Torres' around 10h00 where we have a mandatory safety briefing and pay our entrance into the park. This stop is necessary as not that long ago, 18,000 hectares were destroyed in an uncontrollable fire that was lit due to the negligence of some tourists, a sad sight to behold we will later see!
At 11h00 we head towards the Catamaran that will bring us to the west side of the W-trek where we (as recommended) will start our trekking. We arrive at the start of the trek around 12h45 and hike towards our first stop Campamento Grey in relatively fine weather conditions. We soon realize that it is true what they say about Patagonia : viento, muuuucho viento. Viento that easily imbalances us and forces us to take quite a lot of small breaks just trying not to fly away.
By the time we arrive at our camping site, we are happy to get a rest, even more so because it starts raining quite badly now. We quite easily manage to set up our tent in a bit of a sheltered area (as the wind and rain are still strong), and are happy to see that this first (paid) camping has a nice and warm indoor cooking area. This is of course where we spend the rest of the evening.
