We are woken up around midnight for our navigation shift. The sea is extremely calm and - Karen and me being a team - we decide to each take two turns of half an hour each steering the boat, Karen starting off first. At two o'clock it is time to wake up Veronica and Jose for their shift and - happy for not having encountered any passing boats nor storms during our shift- we quickly return to our double sofabed for some more sleep.
Around 6h30 we are all awake and gradually move to the upper deck to get some fresh air. It proves to become yet another nice day as the sun is up and happily shining in a bright blue sky already. Today will be a full day of navigation so after breakfast we relax reading a book or listening to music (Calle 13!) while Orinson continues to amaze us with excellent meals throughout the day.
In the afternoon Israel needs a quick stop to check the motor and some of us take the opportunity to dive into an immensly dark blue depth of around 3200 meters of open sea! Another first but as no one trusts the open sea we decide to make it a quick in and out dive experience before some big shark decides to come and devour us.
After dinner, Orinson shouts out we have caught a fish, which a couple of minutes later proves to be a giant marlin of over 20kg and more than a meter long. Israel decides we cannot get such a huge fish on board and as such returns the lucky fish it's freedom. We close the day with a beautiful sunset and decide on the shifts for this night's navegation. Due to strong winds we might be arriving around 4h00 in the morning already, and having steered a whole day themselves, our captain decides to let us steer as from 8h00.
I am the captain during the first hour but after one hour I am happy to pass this responsibility to Karen as tonight's wind and waves seem quite powerful turning it into a bumpy ride and making the steering a bit scary at some times.
