After a good couple of nights in Hogsback we headed to a small place called Chinsta on the coast. We opted for another tent and this one was awesome! It was perched on decking, complete with proper twin beds, deck chairs and a wicked ocean view! And to add to perfection the weather was amazing! We sat and chilled out for the afternoon and then went on a free booze cruise with wine!! Can this hostel get any better?! Yes! They also gave us free breakfast!! Haha loving the freebies!! In the evening we had a traditional local 3course meal which was yum! I ate so much :-/ and then watched some drumming and fire dancing before heading to bed :-)
The following day we enjoyed our freebie breakfast then headed further up the coast to Coffey Bay, our home for the next 3nights, staying in the oh so famous 'coffee shack'
The journey there was about 4hours in total. It's very rural so the roads are quite bad, there's cows stood in the middle of them and sheep running all over the place! Hence a slow drive!
We arrived in the afternoon and were shown around and introduced to the bar, given a free drink and made aware of the buffalo rules-drink left handed or down your drink was one of them...wonderful!
Our dorm was nice but we had to cross a river to get to it! No there wasn't a bridge just a load of rocks to hop across on, quite hard with a backpack but we managed! Hut 3 was our little home, a traditional style home/hut made from mud bricks-sounds worse than it was there quite decent!
The next day we went on a village walk with John and Jerry, they told us so much about the way the locals live, how they built their houses etc etc :-) they were good fun! Just two local guys that lived in the village, everything was 'amazing' or 'super dooper dooper' they painted our faces with clay like the tribes, and then at lunchtime we headed to Mama Josephs house where she cooked us a traditional lunch-my favourite!! Good old pap and a soup/stew thing :-/ It was grim, but I swallowed it bit by bit whilst sat on the floor in her house staring at a chicken that was apparently about to lay an egg on her bed...wonderful, like I don't hate chickens enough!!! Like that wasn't bad enough, all of a sudden the chicken made a noise and flew off the bed towards me-well you can probably imagine, I totally nearly peed my pants with fright, Mama Joseph found it hilarious but got me a refill of juice when she saw the fear on my face, could have done with a large vodka!!! Apparently the chicken had just laid it's egg....sigh....
So after that horrific incident I was pleased that the local pub was our next stop for the afternoon! Traditional beer? Why not! John bought a carton for us to share (looked like a milk carton) the beer looked gross but didn't taste too bad! The warning on the side of it amused me slightly, in England we get 'don't drink and drive' In Africa you get 'don't drink and walk on the road' hehe amused me for a good few minutes anyway!! Could do with that warning at home!
Anyway that was pretty much our day and we headed back to the bar, had a few drinks, a lovely roast chicken dinner and then bed :-)
Our last night in Coffey Bay was the fancy dress party, which was just red themed.Me and Vic went as red flowers lol don't ask me why but we did look quite funny! We got free cocktails and shots :-) The night was good, ended up hammered and woke up with a stinking hangover ready for our journey to durban which took forever....
Durban was ok...freezing cold and very windy so we opted for a day out at the mall! We ate traditional bunny chow which was quite nice..not actually bunny as in thumper! It's like a curry in a loaf of bread instead of a bowl! After that we shopped and like big kids headed for a couple of goes on the dodgems! Forgot how much fun they were! The night was chilled, we didn't really do much as we were up early again for our journey to Johannesburg.
Our hostel in Johannesburg was nice, arrived late afternoon so headed out for early tea then bed! The next day we packed ready for our flight and then went for half price pitchers of mojitos! Got a tad tipsy, went bcd got changes then headed back out for more drinks! Nearly died at 5am when Vicky woke me up! So that's the end of an amazing 3months in Africa :-( it's been awesome!!
Next stop South America!! Starting with Argentina :-) excited!!
