We had pre booked tickets for Alcatraz as the trips get booked up months in advance, we had 11am boat tickets and waking up to severe storm weather warnings wasn’t what we wanted to hear on the morning of a boat trip! We prepared ourself with layers, raincoats & Brolleys and headed to pier 33! The trip was still going ahead but we were told to be careful on the boat so we stayed inside ha! The island was fantastic so interesting to hear the tales from the last century... Alcatraz Island was developed as a lighthouse with a military fortification & prison in 1868 then changed to a federal prison from 1934 until 1963. Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of Native Americans from San Francisco, who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation, with public protests through the 1970s. Since 1986 Alcatraz has been a National Historic Landmark & Each year over one million people visit the island! We had famous clam chowder & fish and chips in fisherman’s wharf when we got back to warm ourselves up! In the evening our baseball game was called off due to the storm so we headed to the bars near our hotel as it was still heavy rain so we didn’t want to go too far we exchanged our baseball tickets for Sunday as it was meant to be better weather...
