After visiting Wai-O-Tapu thermal village and Rotorua, we visited New Zealand's only active marine volcano - White Island and we could definately tell it was active. We even got briefed on what to do if it started erupting and hurling lava bombs our way. It was scary!! Equipped with our hard hats and gas masks, we made our way past boiling hot mud pools and sulphur vents. There was a huge crater filled with an emerald coloured lake created by the last volcanic eruption in 2000. It looked amazing from the distance, we didn't fancy having a swim though as it registers -0.6 on the pH scale!! On the way back from the island we managed to spot a huge pod of common dolphins, there where at least 40 of them and most of them right in front of us jumping in and out of the water. We have never seen so many dolphins before! Everywhere we looked they were there.
