Yesterday I picked up the bike in Cáceres and set about making plans for travel to Lisbon. I had an a last few beers in town then headed off to sleep. This morning I woke up and dragged my luggage down to the bike. The bloody fuel was leaking out the air filter box again. I was waiting at the bike shop when my little mate arrived. He was surprised to see me but was genuinely interested in helping me and getting it fixed. Two hours and a couple of perished "O" rings later the bike was ready to go. I was back on the road for 1 pm. The absolute heat of the day. From Cáceres, I headed south some 70 Kms to a town called Mérida. This is a great place and has a lot of historical buildings and structures. There is a roman amphitheater and a circus as well. These are still largely intact and date back to emperor Augustus. The amphitheater is also in great shape (for its age) and there are various archaeological diggings around these adjoining structures. There are many mosaics and buildings that once housed supporting services for those who attended the blood sports and the arts. Around the town there are many remnants still to be seen from this era including the longest roman period bridge still around and aqueducts and other duff as well. Along the river that cuts the town in half there I am old moorish castle running along its banks. A rear place for looking at the old world. I should have stayed the night and looked around a bit more.
