Ross and Nina Uncut
Rainbow beach is one of two start points to get on to Fraser Island (the largest sand dune in the world). We stayed here a couple of nights, one night before we went on the island and one after. Our first day here we went to the beach and did some body boarding. We werent very good but it was a laugh trying!
That night we met our group for going on to the island. There were 19 of us and we would split into two smaller groups and travel in 2 4x4's on the island. We did our shopping for the next few days and had a 'few' drinks to get to know each other.
Next morning we left for Fraser island at 7 so there were a few of us still over the limit when we set off. Luckily there were a couple that had been sensible and they drove for the first section.
After getting the ferry over we headed to Eli creek on the island which had a nice walk into the rain forest. Whoever all the guys in the group were more interested in dune surfing and found a wee hill to play on.
Next stop was one of the fresh water lakes on the dune where there are turtles. Some went for a swim with them whilst others walked around the lake. That night we stayed at an aboriginal camp on the island, we got told some stories about the aboriginals and were introduced to some of their music and dancing.
The next day Ross got his first chance at driving the 4x4 on the beach. It was a bit different from normal driving and after going 8 months without driving he was a bit rusty. He drove us to Indian head where you can look out on the ocean and watch for Dolphins, whales and sharks. We defineltely saw whales and what Ross thinks was a tiger shark but we will never know for sure?!
From there we drove to a huge sand dune we had heard would be good for surfing down and we werent dissapointed. After trekking through the forest we managed to find a clearing and climb the sand dune. It was a 60 metre drop to the bottom which took all of a few seconds once you were on a board. It was great fun although a bit dangerous!
Then we drove to another fresh water lake which had a huge dune that went straight into the lake. It wasnt as big as the previous one but it was faster and we had races with the winner being the first to hit the water!
That night we camped on the beach, had dinner and a few drinks. The next day we saw Lake McKenzie the biggest of the lakes and the nicest. Then we headed for the ferry, Ross was back in the driving seat and did a lot better. He had to race back for the ferry as we were late on leaving but we made it there in time and in one piece!
We had a great time on the island and we would both like to come back and see more of it in the future.
