Ross and Natalie's Travel Journal
We are now back in Chang Mai (northern Thailand). We found a wicked guest house built like a traditional wood house for a bed less than a pound called Julie's Guest House. It was time for a dorm room, we have to get used to living the dorm life for when we get to OZ!! To be honest, a private room became vacant the next morning and we where in it straight away. Chang Mai is basically an overgrown village with many interesting sights to see. We visited Wat Phra Singh with a huge golden Buddha and a crumbling brick Chedi Lang. At the temples you are able to have "Monk Chat" with the young monks. In the evening we went to the famous night market and enjoyed the great atmosphere, food and friendliness of this Thai town. The following two days we found ourselves on a Thai farm learning to cook Thai red and green curry, Tom Yum Khun (spicy prawn soup), spring rolls, and chicken with basil leave, chicken cashew nut and Thai fruit deserts with sticky rice and coconut cream. Ross was showing off a bit with his skills and I just tried to keep up. When we are back home we will be having some Thai cuisine on the menu, you're all invited just bring the wine!! It was great fun and we met a good bunch of travelers. The Sunday Market is a must in Chang Mai and we walked around for hours mesmerized by all the local products. You can't go to Chang Mai and not do hill tribe trekking, so that is exactly what we did. This will be our third trek into the mountains of South East Asia and so worth while. We visited Hmong villages (a little bit put on for the tourist). We shot with a crossbow at the village and I got two bulls eye shots...Ross did not even get close!! We rode on elephants through the forest. One of the elephants had a one year old baby and she was following us all around the camp...wonderful! The highlight of the day was rafting down the Kok River on quick assembled bamboo rafts. It was a good laugh as everyone tried to capsize the raft ahead. We met a charming older English couple and Ross and Charles did some dangerous rock jumping that mad me very panicky...they where s***ting themselves as well!!
