Ross and Natalie's Travel Journal
After Chiang Mai we decided to go to Kanchanaburi with its fine landscape and limestone hills. The town's main sight is the famous "Bridge over the River Kwai" It's a great little place and we stayed in the most amazing wooden bungalows on the River Kwai with stunning views. We visited the famous Tiger temples. The Monks rescued a tiger cub back in the 90's and they have now created this huge tiger sanctuary. There are about 15 tigers and they are tame but they are on leashes. They do not drug them as some might think and it was so incredible to get up close and personal with them. We met a lovely Canadian girl and a girl from New York which we'll be seeing in a couple of months. Can't wait to catch up again Kristen...hope you're enjoying the islands. We visited the fantastic Erawan National Park with the most incredible waterfalls. You can't believe that this place is naturally so beautiful! There are seven sets of waterfalls and a pretty hard climb to the top...we did it and cooled down swimming in the clear blue spring water. There are gigantic fish in the springs and they like to nibble your skin...made me quiver a bit! We then went to the Hellfire pass and learned loads about the Japanese in WW11. You know the story...100 000 prisoners of war died building the hellfire pass during WW11 when Japan was trying to take over the world and so on. It is interesting but inhumane what the Japanese did. We rode on a Death Railway and stopped for a walk over the Bridge of the River Kwai...very touristy indeed! We visited the War and Railway museum and the war cemetery where they buried the British, Holland and Australian soldiers that died.
